There are times when your eyes need immediate attention. Any time you experience trauma to your eyes, you need to be seen. If anything gets in your eye, especially chemicals or foreign objects, you should be seen right away to limit potential damage.
Common Eye Emergencies We Treat
- Scratches or abrasions to the cornea
- Foreign objects such as dust, metal, wood, or glass in the eye
- Chemical splashes from cleaning products or other substances
- Blunt trauma from sports or accidents
- Red, painful, or swollen eyes and eye infections
- Contact lens complications, including lenses stuck in the eye
- Sudden blurry vision, flashes of light, or a sudden increase in floaters
What to Do in an Eye Emergency
For chemical exposure, rinse the eye with clean water for at least 15 minutes, then call us right away. Do not rub your eye or try to remove an object that is stuck in it. If you wear contact lenses and develop pain or redness, remove the lenses and call our office. For severe trauma, deep cuts, or an object penetrating the eye, go to the nearest emergency room.
Sudden Vision Changes Can Signal Serious Conditions
Sudden distortion, a dark curtain over your vision, or new flashes and floaters can indicate retinal problems, including complications of diabetic retinopathy or wet macular degeneration. Severe eye pain with headache, nausea, and blurry vision can signal acute angle-closure glaucoma, which needs immediate care.
Follow-Up Care
After treating an injury or infection, we schedule follow-up visits to make sure your eye heals properly. If an injury affects your vision long term, we update your prescription and help you choose new eyewear from our designer frames. Athletes can reduce future injuries with protective eyewear through our sports vision services, and UV-protective sunglasses help shield your eyes outdoors. Routine comprehensive eye exams remain the best way to catch problems early. Learn about other conditions we treat.
