Request an AppointmentWhat to Expect During Your Comprehensive Eye Exam
Our exams are thorough so we can fully understand your needs and accurately prescribe the right vision solution. A comprehensive eye exam is much more than a vision screening. It evaluates how well you see and how healthy your eyes are.
Health and Vision History
We begin by taking a full patient history. Many eye and vision problems are tied to other health conditions, so please share your vision history and pertinent medical history, including conditions that run in your family, such as glaucoma or macular degeneration. Next, we discuss any symptoms you are experiencing so your optometrist can get to the root of the problem and decide whether additional tests are needed.
Preliminary Testing
After reviewing your history and symptoms, we test:
- Visual acuity
- Depth perception
- Color vision
- Peripheral vision
- Eye muscle movements
- Neurological responses
- Eye pressure
Optos Digital Retinal Imaging
We also complete a scan of your retina using Optos Digital Retinal Imaging. Your doctor may need to dilate your eyes, which can make them more sensitive to light. The test is painless and allows us to see early signs of eye diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy, much earlier than ever before.
Refraction and Eye Teamwork
Next, the doctor performs a refraction to determine your lens prescription and diagnose refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia. We also evaluate how well your eyes focus, move, and work together.
Eye Health Evaluation
One of the final steps is evaluating your overall eye health. We may discuss dry eyes, blue light exposure and computer vision symptoms, contact lens habits, and early signs of cataracts. If you wear or want contacts, let us know so we can include a contact lens fitting.
Additional Testing and Referrals
If your doctor feels additional tests are needed based on your history or exam findings, those will be completed. When necessary, you may be referred to an appropriate specialist for further testing and treatment. Afterward, our opticians can help you choose from our designer frames.
